Here we go again!
These pictures are from this site.
1. I don't know these people, I'll bet they were kind and wonderful.
2. I make it all up, no ill will is intended.
This is Herbert and Emmie. They are inviting you to stay for Sunday dinner. The whole town goes to Herbert and Emmie's house once a month. It's quite a crowd. Including the family that moved nearby last week from Iowa, they count in at about 38 total.
After all the delightful food is consumed there will be frolicking among all the children. Blind Man's Bluff and Tag. Catching frogs in the river bed.
The men will all settle in down by the river bank, sit upon fallen Silver Maple to smoke, chew and share their stories. After much discussion it is decided that Hank and his wife Millie (Millie stayed back at the homestead today) will host the next week's supper to feed the crew in order to finish the barn raising.
The women folk gather around, some rocking their babes, to tell of their week's happenings. "Did you hear? Aggie had twins on Wednesday -- and to think they have 5 other mouths to feed already!"
Emmie is always the first to be on hand to help with the new babes that come along. Her 2 children, all grown, have moved to Kansas.
Back at home, Millie is sure that Hank is inviting the whole town to their place to eat next week even though he knows her rheumatism has been acting up. She knows that the barn must be finished soon but she dreads having to play hostess. She has taken to long bouts of sitting in the rocking chair. Just sitting. She thought when she married a much older man that he would be the one with the ailments, not she. She thought of airing her thoughts to her momma back in Baltimore in a letter but she knows where that will lead. Momma told her not to marry Hank and move to the middle of gosh forsaken nowhere. Nope,Millie decided she had had enough of the "I told you so" reply letters.

I love coming down from Michigan to see Uncle Herbert and Aunt Emmie:) Herbert is my daddy's brother. Aunt Emmie makes the best butter cakes in the world. Her biscuits melt in your mouth...and the chicken is crispy and moist. Aunt Emmie is going to teach me how to sew, as soon as the corn in in. So bring your best dish and come Sunday after Church to visit.
